Retreat 2026

On February 28th, the Cleveland Catholic Deaf Community, Chapter 18 of ICDA-US, embarked on a spiritual journey with Fr. Christopher Klusman, the Director of the Deaf Apostolate for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. This exceptional weekend was filled with moments of reflection, learning, and community bonding. Fr. Christopher, being one of the few Deaf priests in the United States, shared his personal story of faith and perseverance. His role in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee is pivotal, as he provides support and spiritual guidance to the Deaf community. Fr. Christopher’s journey to priesthood was marked by his studies at Saint Francis de Sales Seminary, a path that culminated in his ordination in 2011. His milestone ordination was not only a celebration for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee but also an inspiration to Deaf Catholics nationwide.

Retreat at Solanus Casey Center

Our CCDC members, Barb Kuhel, James Dudasik, Diane Deluca, and John Stadler, accompanied by Fr. Mike Depcik, attended the Deaf Retreat held Saturday, March 7, 2026, at the Blessed Solanus Casey Center located in Mount Elliot, Michigan. The theme of the retreat was “Do you want a closer relationship with God?”. They thoroughly enjoyed their trip and appreciated the opportunity to deepen their faith.

Jesus Deaf Crew

Five Clevelanders attended Jesus Deaf Crew from August 4th to 7th. It was our 2nd year, and we yearned to learn more about our Catholic faith. Although it wasn't enough, Fr. Mike Depcik taught us so much we did not know. He explained the importance of Mass and it’s purpose. Most fascinating was knowing that the alter represents Christ. Each time the priest kisses the alter, he honors where the “Miracle of the Eucharist” occurs. The video we viewed showing Christ’s sacrifice at the liturgy of the Eucharist actually gave us goosebumps! We attended Mass daily and prayed the rosary everyday, showing our devotion to Jesus and Mary, growing closer to God.

Deaf Eucharistic Congress

On Thursday, April 3, 2025, members of Cleveland Catholic Deaf Center Chapter 18 embarked on a 5-hour journey to Emmitsburg, MD, and arrived at the hotel in the evening. The next day, Friday, April 4, 2025, the group visited the Shrine of Elizabeth Seton, a revered saint, and took a tour of her residence and the cemetery where she was laid to rest. On Saturday, April 5, 2025, CCDC members attended the Deaf Eucharist Congress, which started with registration and information about the Shrine and Congress schedule. The committee organized two groups to present on growing in faith, featuring Jeannine Adkins and Deacon Patrick Garybill. A 4:30 pm Mass was held at the National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes and drew approximately 215 deaf people from 25 states. On Sunday, April 6, 2025, CCDC members joined other deaf attendees for Mass led by Fr. Mike Depcik at Country Church, followed by brunch adjacent to St. Ignatius Church before departing for Cleveland. The experience was truly enjoyable.
